Another excellent weekend away with the hillwalking club: my first visit to Snowdonia since starting at Cambridge. We stayed at Caseg Fraith bunkhouse, in the Ogwen valley. On Saturday I led a group doing some scrambling on Tryfan and the Glyderau, and on Sunday I did Snowdon from Pen-y-Pass via the Pyg and Miner’s Tracks.

With the IDP completed, I had time for a weekend away with the club – to the Cheviots, staying in Byrness youth hostel. On Saturday we took advantage of the excellent, clear (but cold!) weather for an epic 40km yomp from Chew Green Roman Camp to The Cheviot and back. On Sunday, low cloud eliminated any views on a shorter walk on the border SW of Carter Bar, so I only took a couple of photos.

A year on from my first trip with CUHWC, and I found myself leading a group on this year’s New Members’ trip to Edale, in the Peak District. We walked from Edale to Hayfield via the Kinder Plateau.

I joined four other members of CUHWC for a fantastic ten days in Switzerland. We camped near the village of Lauterbrunnen, in the ‘Berner Oberland’, part of the Swiss Alps. We did eight excellent walks in the surrounding area, with highlights including the Eiger Trail, Jungfraujoch, Faulhorn, Schwarzhorn and Schilthorn. Before returning home, we spent a day exploring Bern, the Swiss capital.

One month before exams, and I decided to have a weekend off for the term’s only hillwalking club weekend trip. We went to Langdale, in the Lake District, and despite several organisational mishaps, had a very enjoyable stay! Walks were on Bow Fell and Crinkle Crags (Saturday) and the Langdale Pikes (Sunday).

My first tour with Cambridge University Brass Band was to the Liverpool/St Helens area. Over the four days, we enjoyed playing five successful concerts, and made visits to Chester and Liverpool.

I went on the last CUHWC trip of the term: a weekend in the Howgill Fells (western Yorkshire Dales) in Cumbria. We enjoyed walks on The Calf on Saturday, and Wild Boar Fell on Sunday. Lots of fun was also had in the snow and on the frozen hilltop lakes!

The first weekend trip of Lent term ’04 was to the Brecon Beacons National Park, staying at the South Wales Caving Club’s bunkhouse at Penwyllt. I spent Saturday walking on the Brecon Beacons, doing Pen y Fan, Corn Du, Cribyn and Fan y Big, and on Sunday four of us enjoyed an excellent walk on Black Mountain. Much time was also spent squeezing through improbably small gaps in benches, fences etc.: an activity befitting a weekend staying with cavers!

The CUHWC New Year trip went to Borrowdale in the Lake District, staying in the High House bunkhouse. Much wet weather was endured but did not spoil the excellent walks! N.B. On day 4 we ascended Lingmell and Scafell Pike, but it was too wet for photography!
