Alison proposed a Duffers’ weekend camping in the Dark Peak. I didn’t really fancy camping in December, but drove up both days for walks on Stanage Edge and Mam Tor. Good to catch up with a few people I hadn’t seen for a while!

Kate visited for a day walk in the White Peak, taking in Robin Hood’s Stride, Lathkill Dale and Stanton Moor.

I joined CUHWC for a very wet weekend in the Lakes, staying in the large bunkhouse at Dunmail Raise. On the Saturday, I walked over Fairfield to Patterdale, returning via Striding Edge and Helvellyn. On the Sunday, I did a shorter circuit from Helm Crag to Steel Fell.

Sunday brought my seventh annual CUHWC Edale trip! Ruth and I met Michael in Hayfield (where he had been supervising a DofE group) and we walked over to Edale together. For the return leg, I joined Dave, Joe and eight new members on a route via Hollins Cross, Brown Knoll and Farlands Booth.

Ruth visited me in Derby for Edale weekend. On the Saturday, we walked in the Staffordshire Peak, taking in The Roaches, Gun and Tittesworth Reservoir.

There were sunny spells and clear views for my first local walk of October, starting in Curbar, and I enjoyed the early-autumn colours of the trees and bracken. My route took in Froggatt Edge, Higger Tor, Abney Moor and Eyam.

Ruth and I spent a weekend in the North York Moors, staying at Osmotherley Youth Hostel. On the Saturday, we did a circular walk from Kildale, including Roseberry Topping and Gisborough Moor, in strong winds but some sunshine. On the Sunday it was sunny again and much calmer for a linear walk along the Cleveland Way from Swainby to Ingleby Greenhow.

On my way home, I spent another day at Ruth’s. We did another short walk, on Arnside Knott, which gave excellent views across Morcambe Bay to the Lake District.

For the final three days of my trip, I enjoyed excellent sunny weather for an expedition through the hills between Glen Spean and Loch Ericht, staying in the Culra bothy. This included five new Munros for me, and repeat ascents of two that I’d done before. At the end of the trip, my Munro total stood at 131.

For the next couple of days, I stayed in a hostel near Fort William. Tuesday was so wet that I didn’t do a walk, except a short stroll by Neptune’s Staircase on the Caledonian Canal. The sunny spells returned on Wednesday though, and I enjoyed a traverse of the westernmost three Munros of the Mamores.

For the start of my week in Scotland, I stayed in Roybridge, from where I did a short, wet walk through the cloud to Beinn a’ Chaorainn, and a longer, drier walk over three Munros and six Tops on Creag Meagaidh.

On my way north for another week in the Highlands, I spent a day with Ruth in Carnforth. We went for a short walk on the limestone pavements of nearby Hutton Roof Crags.

For my Bank Holiday Monday walk I went south of Derby, to Charnwood Forest. My route took in the two largest hills of the area – Beacon Hill and Bardon Hill – as well as parts of the Leicestershire Round and Ivanhoe Way long distance paths.

Today’s local walk was through the limestone country of the White Peak. I started in Alport and headed up Lathkill Dale, returning via Deep Dale, Ashford in the Water, Bakewell and Haddon Park.

I went down to Saltash for a couple of days to visit my parents and grandad. We went out for a couple of local walks, to Huntingdon Warren on Dartmoor and along the Southwest Coast Path between Looe and Polperro.

I headed to the High Peak Estate for a walk starting near the Snake Pass Inn. My route went up to the Kinder plateau, then followed the Pennine Way north to Higher Shelf Stones and Bleaklow.

This year’s CUHWC summer trip went to the Saastal area of the Valais Alps in Switzerland, based in Saas Grund. My Alpine gear didn’t get very extensive use this year, but I did several excellent walks to 3000m+ peaks: the Mittaghorn, Monte Moro, Jegihorn (by via ferrata) and Seetalhorn.

I spent a weekend in eastern Wales, based in Llangollen, where I was joined by Ruth until the Saturday evening. Our walks explored some of the nearby hills, taking in Castell Dinas Bran on Friday evening, Pistyll Rhaeadr and Cadair Berwyn on Saturday, and Llantysilio Mountain on Sunday.

At the start of her summer holidays, Ruth visited me in Derby for the weekend. On the Saturday, we walked on the western edge of the Peak District, over Shutlingsloe (third time lucky for me!), Shining Tor and Tegg’s Nose. On Sunday morning, we did a shorter walk on some of my local footpaths around Quarndon.

Before heading home, we called into Kinlochleven for the first day of the CUHWC trip. We climbed Sgurr Eilde Mor (a repeat ascent for me) with Jo, Simon and Paul.
