Once again I headed to Seathwaite, at the head of Borrowdale, for CUHWC’s New Year trip. On the Saturday I visited two Nuttalls near the Corridor Route, returning via Great Gable, in reasonable weather. On the Sunday I headed to the Northwestern Fells but we only managed Whiteside and Hopegill Head before deciding to cut the route short and descend via Gasgale Gill, due to the persistent low cloud and rain.

This year’s New Year trip to the Highlands was to Roybridge, where we rented a couple of cosy cottages just outside the village. Very poor weather throughout the week somewhat restricted our hillwalking options, but I still managed to visit five Corbetts and sub-2000′ Marilyn!

It was a rather dreary day for my final Peak District walk of the year, starting in Eyam. My route took in Sir William Hill, which was under a dusting of snow, Froggatt Edge, and a few obscure P30s in between.

I went for another walk in the White Peak, starting in Ashford in the Water and ticking off a few P30 hills around Monsal Dale and Cressbrook Dale. The route included two tops that I’d been meaning to visit for a while even before acquiring the list: Fin Cop and Wardlow Hay Cop – both excellent viewpoints! The forecast was for showers, but pleasingly it stayed dry for me until the last hour or so of the walk.

Needing to be back in Derby by mid-afternoon, I opted for a half-day walk taking in some of the P30s to the east and north of Hartington. The route covered quite a lot of new ground for me, the highlights being Carder Low and Sheen Hill.

I went on the CUHWC weekend trip to Snowdonia, camping at Gwern Gof Isaf as the club had filled the Caseg Fraith bunkhouse. In search of new Nuttalls, I ventured further afield one generally does when staying at the foot of Tryfan (!), heading to the north-eastern Carneddau on Saturday and doing the Blaenau Ffestiniog skyline on Sunday. Only Andrew (and Mark, on Saturday) were dedicated enough baggers to join me, but both walks were excellent nonetheless!

I visited Ruth for a long weekend in the hills, ticking off a few more English Nuttalls. On the Friday, I did a solo walk in the Howgill Fells, but sadly the higher summits were in cloud most of the day. Conditions were much better at the weekend, with clear blue skies for the Buttermere skyline from Fleetwith Pike to Red Pike on the Saturday (Honister Crag and Dodd being new Nuttalls for me) and a spectacular, unexpected cloud inversion around Wild Boar Fell and Baugh Fell on the Sunday!

Ruth and I spent a few days in the Western Highlands, with mixed weather. Our somewhat complicated itinerary took us to Crianlarich (to bag Beinn a’ Chroin’s East Top), then out to the Isle of Mull for a couple of days (to bag the Corbett and the Munro), then to Strontian (where wet, windy weather prevented any Corbett-bagging), and finally to Glen Coe (for Beinn a’ Chrulaiste). An excellent, varied few days despite the poor weather at times!

I went down to Kent for the weekend for Di and Ben’s wedding. The ceremony was held at the Church of St James the Great, in East Malling, with an evening reception at Dorton House in nearby Seal. That left plenty of unfilled hours, so I also took the opportunity to bag a few of the local Marilyns and HuMPs! Then on the Sunday I met up with Alex P for a longer walk to Leith Hill and Holmbury Hill.

As has become usual, we made a round walk of the CUHWC Edale Trip (my ninth!) by starting early in Hayfield to walk over to Edale village to meet the club party. For the return leg, I joined Andrew’s group on the southern edges of the Kinder Plateau, with bagging detours (for Andrew) to the summit of Kinder Scout and Mill Hill.

Ruth visited me for the weekend of the CUHWC Edale Trip. On the Saturday, we did a long-ish walk in excellent sunny weather in the White Peak south of Buxton. Our route took in Parkhouse Hill, Chrome Hill, various other minor summits, and the impressive gorge of Chee Dale.

I visited my parents in SE Cornwall for a long weekend. Our outings took us to the coast at Mount Edgcumbe, the Eden Project and surrounding area, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor.

The Old Duffers gathered for a weekend in the Lakes to celebrate Alison’s completion of the Wainwrights. Her completion walk, on the Saturday, was the Newlands Horseshoe from Scope End round to her final fell, Catbells. On the Sunday, a smaller group of us climbed Skiddaw via the Ullock Pike Ridge, taking in a couple of Nuttalls (Sale How and Little Calva) on the descent.

My parents visited me for the weekend. We did a short local stroll from Tutbury on the Saturday, and a longer walk from Ashford in the Water on the Sunday.

After the disappointment of the cancellation of the CUHWC trip to Fort William this week due to the severe weather, I was keen to head to the hills for at least the weekend. Ruth, Michael, Mark and Sara joined me for two nights at Ambleside Backpackers Hostel and two walks in the Southern Fells. On the Saturday, we climbed Glaramara and Allen Crags (and their many Nuttall summits) from Seathwaite. On the Sunday, we did a linear walk from Broughton Mills to Coniston village via some Wainwright Outlying Fells.

For today’s local walk, I headed to Cannock Chase and the nearby Hednesford Hills. Starting at Stile Cop, I visited the area’s only HuMP, Castle Ring, and a few other minor summits.

Alison and I went to the North Pennines for the Bank Holiday weekend. On the Saturday, we met up with Ruth and Sarah for the Hadrian’s Wall section of their expedition along the Pennine Way. We then stayed at the campsite in Alston for two nights, bagging a few Nuttalls west of Alston on the Sunday and a few more above Burnhope Reservoir on the Monday – nine in total but it should have been ten (as we carelessly failed to bag Harwood Common!).

We broke the drive home from Switzerland wth an afternoon exploring Strasbourg.

We then transferred to Grindelwald, in the Bernese Oberland, for a few more days of walking and sightseeing. My two major walks were along the Eiger Trail (below the famous North Face) and to the Faulhorn.

Ian, Emma and I then spent four days mountaineering, while Jon and Amy went to Lago Maggiore (not far away in Italy). Spending two nights in the Dix hut and one at the Vignettes hut, we enjoyed excellent weather and spectacular scenery on three peaks: La Luette, Pigne d’Arolla and L’Evêque.
