A big group of Duffers convened in Natland for Ruth’s housewarming weekend. We walked on Middleton Fell (Yorkshire Dales) on Saturday and Bowfell (Lake District) on Sunday.

I spent a week in the Highlands: a few days near Ullapool with Michael followed by a couple of solo days based in Pitlochry. As well as revisiting eight Munros, I ticked off seven new Corbetts, taking my total to 102.

Staying at Ruth’s house ahead of the following day’s CompassSport Cup orienteering competition, she and I met up with a few other Old Duffers who were in the area for a walk around Wet Sleddale: an unusual approach to these fells, but it satisfied our various bagging needs for Wainwrights, Outlying Fells and Deweys!

I visited Alex and Ausma for a long weekend in Müllheim, enjoying several short-ish walks in the nearby Black Forest (with spectacular autumn colours), and a day trip to Switzerland with Alex for a big mountain walk (above an awesome cloud inversion!)

Alex P and I spent three days backpacking in southern Snowdonia, tackling a strenuous 75km route from Harlech to Llanuwchllyn via the Rhinogs, Cadair Idris and the Arans. Hard work, but well worth the effort!

Gordon and Marianne hosted a Duffers’ weekend at their house in Culham. On the Saturday, we walked along the Thames Path into Oxford, and then went punting on the Cherwell.

For the second half of the holiday we moved the other side of Mont Blanc, to Argentière in the Chamonix valley. The weather was a little cooler than it had been in Italy but we still had several sunny days’ for more super walking through awesome scenery!

For the first week of this year’s summer holiday in the Alps, Ruth and I were joined by the Patricks in Val di Rhêmes, from where we explored parts of the Gran Paradiso National Park and Valle d’Aosta. Unusually hot weather was great for walking but kept us off any snow routes!

Many hillwalking friends convened in the Trossachs for Spring Bank Holiday weekend to join Ruth in celebrating her 282nd and final Munro, Ben Lomond. This was preceded by a day in the Arrochar Alps, and followed by a walk up the nearby Corbett of Beinn a’ Choin.

I joined a few of the Duffers in Ambleside for the weekend, to catch up with Emily and her family who were here on holiday from the USA. We enjoyed good walks around the Scandale Horseshoe and over Loughrigg Fell, plus the obligatory pub dinners and visits to tea shops!

A varied and mostly sunny long weekend based around a visit to Ian and Emma in Chester-le-Street. I broke the drive north on the Friday by bagging Yockenthwaite Moor, in Wharfedale. On the Saturday we pottered around Bamburgh on the Northumberland Coast. And on the Sunday I ticked off three more Nuttalls south of Weardale.

For this year’s Duffers’ New Year trip, we headed to Glen Shiel, where we stayed in the spacious and comfortable Shiel Lodge. Two days of good weather to start the week made for excellent snowy walks on the South Shiel Ridge and the Five Sisters. The wetter, windier conditions that followed were still generally suitable for Corbett- and Graham-bagging. A super week!

I met up with 15 other Old Duffers for a weekend in Snowdonia, staying in a cosy bunkhouse near Bethesda. We walked on the northern Glyderau on the Saturday and the northern Carneddau on the Sunday.

For the second half of my week’s holiday I headed to Müllheim in the Black Forest to visit Alex and Ausma. I walked locally on the Thursday, exploring the foothills of the Black Forest and the vineyards of the Rhein valley. Then on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we sought higher hills (all around 1400m) in the Vosges (France), Jura (Swizerland) and Black Forest (Germany)!

A few of the Old Duffers joined me in the south-western Lakes for the weekend to celebrate my 30th birthday! On the Saturday, we did a good walk from Wasdale over Yewbarrow, Scoat Fell and Pillar, followed by pub dinner at the King George IV Inn in Eskdale Green. On the Sunday, we opted for a shorter walk up Harter Fell.

Our return route from Austria was via the Fränkische Schweiz region of central Germany, where Michael and Kat were to be married at the castle of Burg Rabeneck. We also had time for a little exploration of the surrounding area, and broke the drive back to England with a couple of hours in Aachen.

I went down to Cambridge for the weekend to visit some friends, wander round a few old haunts, and attend CUHWC’s annual Garden Party, punting and barbecue.

Michael, Ruth and I then spent another couple of days backpacking from Loch Arkaig to the remote and impressive Munro of Sgurr na Ciche. We took in three other Munros and two Corbetts on the way!

With Michael having taken Alison’s place, we then spent a couple of days bagging (or re-climbing in my case) Munros either side of Loch Quoich.
