Local walks at Alton and Elton (19th-20th April 2008)

A free weekend at home gave me time for two local walks. On Saturday, I went to the Staffordshire Moorlands, starting at Rocester and circumnavigating Alton Towers (at a fairly large radius!). On Sunday it was drizzly, so I opted for a short morning walk from Elton – I’d been meaning to visit Gratton and Long Dales for a while, but had struggled to combine them into a longer route so this was an ideal time.

CUHWC Edale Trip (14th October 2007)

I took advantage of my proximity to the Peak District to go on my fifth Edale trip with CUHWC, made all the better by not having to spend eight hours on a coach getting there and back! Instead, I drove up to Hayfield and yomped over to Edale while the main group travelled up from Cambridge, then joined one of the groups walking back to Hayfield by a less direct route.

Elton, Youlgreave and Stanton Moor (9th September 2007)

Now that I live in Quarndon, just north of Derby (having started my first full time job, as a Thermofluids Technologist with Rolls-Royce, a couple of weeks ago), the Peak District is just a short drive away. I did a ten-mile walk exploring the dales near the SE corner of the national park. My circular route from the village of Elton took me through Middleton Dale, Youlgreave, Stanton-in-Peak and Stanton Moor.

Two walks in the Dark Peak (27th-28th August 2006)

A couple of friends from the Hillwalking Club joined me over the bank holiday weekend for two walks in the Dark Peak. On Sunday, I walked with Alex and Simon, doing a long, boggy ridge walk starting and finishing near Howden Reservoir in the upper Derwent valley. On Monday, it was just Alex and me for a walk around Ladybower Reservoir, including more classic Peak District edges.

Family day out in Matlock Bath (20th August 2006)

I met up with my uncle Jonathan and his family for a day out in the Matlock Bath area, including meeting my cousin Xavier for the first time. We took the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham and visited a mining museum in the town. Then we went to Haddon Hall, where, by pure coincidence, we met my uncle Michael and his family, on holiday from their home in Dorset!
