On our way home from the Highlands, we spent a weekend with CUHWC in Patterdale. On the Saturday we had good, if hazy, weather for the Patterdale Horseshoe, and on the Sunday, we walked to Helvellyn in low cloud.

Ruth and I spent Spring Bank Holiday week Munro-bagging in the Northwest Highlands. In six days of day-walks and backpacking, we ticked off most of the Munros around Glens Strathfarrar, Cannich, Affric and Shiel – 22 in total, taking my total to 160!

I went up to the Roaches for the day to walk with CUHWC. Our route took in Hen Cloud, the Roaches, Lud’s Church and Gun, and passed lots of scarecrows thanks to the annual Meerbrook Scarecrow Festival!

My parents spent another weekend with me in Hilton. We walked around Edale on the Saturday and went for a short stroll near Alton on the Sunday.

When FoCUBB decided not to go camping in Wales due to the wet forecast, I made last minute alternative plans for a trip to the Lake District, staying at Ruth’s house in Carnforth. On Saturday, I did a long solo walk in sunshine in the North Western and Western Fells (Ruth was out supervising D of E), and on Sunday we did the Borrowdale Horseshoe (the obscure Borrowdale near Tebay, that is!).

I went for a brisk Bank Holiday morning walk along parts of the Dove and Manifold valleys in the White Peak, and through the surrounding countryside, starting in Hartington.

My parents visited me in Hilton for a few days. At the weekend, we enjoyed the continuing good weather on a couple of walks in the Peak District. On the Saturday, we walked to Shutlingsloe and Three Shire Heads from Macclesfield Forest, and on the Sunday to Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill from Longnor.

I took advantage of the warm, sunny weather for a walk in the Dark Peak, starting by Ladybower Reservoir. My route took in Crook Hill, Alport Castles, Blackden Brook and Win Hill.

I spent Easter weekend in Braemar with a few of the Duffers. A big dump of snow before we arrived and a minor ankle injury hindered my Munro-bagging, but I still managed good walks to Beinn a’ Bhuird and Derry Cairngorm, plus a couple of shorter outings.

I joined CUHWC for part of the Easter vacation trip to Snowdonia, staying once again at the Bryn Brethynau bunkhouse near Capel Curig. I enjoyed two excellent walks, in very variable weather, on the Carneddau on Saturday and the Glyderau on Sunday.

Ruth visited me in Hilton for Saturday night and Sunday. We enjoyed a walk on some of the eastern Peak District Edges – White, Froggatt, Curbar and Baslow.

I popped down to Worcestershire for the day to join CUHWC’s first ever trip to the Malvern Hills (though not my first visit). Starting at British Camp, we did a full out-and-back traverse of the ridge in both directions, plus a bonus ascent of Herefordshire Beacon at each end of the day (one while I waited for the Cambridge party to arrive, and the other to see sunset)! All the humps and bumps added up to a surprisingly long walk of nearly 30km and over 1500m ascent!

The weather was excellent for the last CUHWC weekend trip of the term, to Eskdale. On the Saturday I did Scafell via Slight Side, and on the Sunday I explored some of the outlying fells around Devoke Water.

I joined CUHWC for a weekend in the Yorkshire Dales, staying at the Selside Centre in Ribblesdale. On the Saturday, I did the Three Peaks walk with Ruth, Alison and Alex, encountering a fair amount of snow on the tops! On the Sunday, we drove over to Wensleydale and walked over Dodd Fell and Drumaldrace from Hawes.

Some of the Cambridge hillwalkers visited me in Hilton for my housewarming weekend. We walked on The Roaches on the Saturday and in Dove Dale on the Sunday.

I took advantage of a crisp, clear, sunny winter’s day for a walk onto Kinder Scout from Edale, walking most of the perimeter of the plateau as well as visiting, for the first time, its highest point.

I went on the CUHWC weekend trip to Snowdonia. The trip was based at the Pinnacle Club hut in Cwm Dyli, but Ruth and I stayed at the nearby Bryn Gwynant youth hostel to save bunkhouse spaces for the Cambridge-dwellers. The weather was mostly dry but there was cloud on the tops both days. On the Saturday, I did Elidir Fawr and Y Garn from Nant Peris, and on the Sunday, Cnicht and Moelwyn Mawr from Croesor.

I visited Ruth in Carnforth for the weekend. We walked in the Lakes both days, doing Blencathra on the Saturday and the Ill Bell ridge on the Sunday. There was lots of snow on the ground, but unfortunately also lots of low cloud on the hills!

For this year’s younger Duffers’ New Year trip, we went to the Southern Highlands, staying in two ‘Highland Lodges’ near the shore of Loch Tay, a few miles from Killin. The mixed weather allowed three good mountain days and three lower level walks, and the long hours of darkness provided plenty of time for cooking, eating and socialising back at the lodge!
